ROSEHILL PREVIEW with Chris Scholtz – June 1

31 May, 2024

Selections and best bets from Chris Scholtz for the Rosehill meeting on June 1 plus Trial Watch and Blackbook Reports.

TRACK RATING: Soft 5 (8am Friday); RAIL: Out 3 metres

Best Bets

RACE 5 (10) PISANELLO: Stylish gelding by Ribchester has shown plenty of promise in his six starts to date and has the look of a late season 3YO ready to rise quickly through the classes. Beaten a nose when resuming at Wyong before he outclassed a C1 field over 1100m at the Scone carnival where he was held up before breaking clear and putting a good margin of more than three lengths on them with a classy turn of foot over the last 200m. Godolphin rate him highly and have him well placed to take the next step.

RACE 6 (16) DEMIANA: The Waller stable has been playing a waiting game with this mare since she resumed five weeks ago with a luckless second over 1300m in this class at this course when she rattled late after being badly held up. She’s since bypassed several races (wet tracks?) but it’s time to press the go button as she is well placed to run to her best in this field where she will enjoy the expected genuine pace. Just keep an eye on the weather!

RACE 7 (3) WATERFORD: Finally gets his first crack at 2000m and it seems the right time after his impressive efforts in strong form races since resuming. Added to his super record at this course when he ran down subsequent winner Iknowastar first-up over 1500m under 58kg then was right out of luck in the Scone Cup (1600m) when beaten narrowly by Skylab after he was hammered in a traffic jam. Note that Chris Waller has scratched him from a Group race at Eagle Farm to give him the home track advantage.

Why They Can Win…..

RACE 1 – (6) NINGALOO STAR: Honest mare sprinted hard to the line in heavy going for a big win second up on the Kensington. Expect her to hold that form.

RACE 2 – (7) POINT AND SHOOT: There’s been good merit in both his runs to date. Step up in distance will suit.

RACE 3 – (1) REMATCH: Topweight sets him a task but rates as the one to beat. Drawn to suit with the important addition of blinkers a positive move.

RACE 4 – (13) MATUSALEM: Blinkers off and gelded since he last raced. Strong trial suggests he’s ready to perform fresh at good odds.

RACE 8 – (7) PERFECT PLAY: Promising placings have laid a strong platform for this talented import. Should have won at Scone and he’s 2.5kg better off against the winner.

RACE 9 – (16) TYMPANIST: Good placing first-up over 1400m and will be better for it. Genuine performer in this class and rain will enhance his chances.

RACE 10 – (8) JEDIBEEL: Confident win first-up before game placing at the Scone carnival. Will strip at his peak for this.

TRIAL WATCH REPORT

GOSFORD May 27: The well performed RAHNI FACTOR impressed winning his 800m heat. Good speed to lead and was kept under a tight grip to easily hold the chasers in the run to the line (48.47; 34.31). DELEXO showed he is in good form with a dominant win in his open heat over 1000m (59.30; 34.31).

ROSEHILL May 24: In the fastest 900m heat (54.47; 34.81) the Melbourne visitor DAZZLING LUCY took the eye with strong work from of the pace to finish a closing third.

WARWICK FARM May 21: Everest winner THINK ABOUT IT continued his build up to his Brisbane campaign with another easy trial. Blake Shinn gave him easy time in his open heat over 815m (48.11; 33.21) where he finished a closing third behind DASHING LEGEND. This was his second trial since he ran in the Doncaster Mile in early April and will have him in good shape for Brisbane. Likely types from the maiden and 2YO heats include BLUE ILLUSION and SNUBA.

ROSEHILL May 17: A good mix of trials featuring some classy types preparing to head north for the Brisbane carnival. SCHWARZ is primed to perform well after doing all that was required to win the fastest of the five heats over 1030m (62.55; 35.00). Sat off the leader before extending smoothly to win under a quiet ride. The G1 winner IN SECRET is another star on track for Brisbane after a pleasing win in a strong 900m heat (62.99; 35.49). This was her second trial since her good break from racing and she was asked to work to the line from off the pace, getting the upper hand over the quietly ridden FACILE over the last 100m. STEP ASIDE is set for a good campaign after strong work to win his 900m heat with plenty in reserve (56.83; 35.87). Travelled wide before closing on the lead and doing it easily under a good hold. TSARINA SOPHIA is a sharp runner when right and races best fresh. She’s in good order to resume after breezing through her 900m heat (54.95; 34.45), showing her natural speed to lead at her leisure and score by more than three lengths.

RANDWICK May 16: There were some strong 2YO heats featuring some classy youngsters including the G1 Champagne Stakes winner BROADSIDING. He finished second in his 1045m heat (64.22; 35.86), putting in quality work as he surged through the line from well off the pace.

WARWICK FARM May 7: Some big names brought unexpected class to this full set held on the polytrack due to the wet weatherAs always it’s hard to read a lot into poly trials as few horses come off the bit but this session served the purpose for the likes of THINK ABOUT IT and IN SECRET as they prepare for the Brisbane carnival. They were given easy trials with THINK ABOUT IT finishing second and IN SECRET sixth in a 740m heat in slow time (44.56; 33.45).
