Caulfield Racing Preview: Saturday 10th February by Dean McHugh

09 February, 2024

Ten fantastic races come from Caulfield this Saturday. With several prestigious Group races up for grabs, there is plenty of value to be found. Let’s review each of these races in more detail.

Race 1: Premier Signs Handicap (2000m)

Saturday’s Caulfield action kicks off with a long-distance race where nine horses will head down to post.

Bermadez is likely to be popular in the betting following a win at the track when last seen. He takes a step up in trip here, and there will be high hopes that this could unlock even more improvement.

Flash Feeling has run well at Caulfield in the past, finishing in the places in two of his three track starts. He will rate as the main danger.

Race 2: Herald Sun Handicap (2400m)

The long-distance action continues with our second race of the day.

Oceanic Flash is without a win in ten starts but was only just denied last time out and could go close once again.

Divine Purpose is another who is on a long losing run but has run well in races of this nature in the past.

Galilaeus has won two of his last four races and will hope for another victory here. Needing to bounce back from a poor showing last time out, he could be a major contender, particularly if the rain comes.

Race 3: Mrc Clip Clop Club Handicap (1600m)

Despite sixteen horses being declared for our third contest of the day, Another Wil looks to be one of the best bets of the day.

Having won two of his last four starts, he looks like a horse on the up and could have too much class for this field.

If looking to take him on, Zamborghini could be the pick. Having won two of his last four races, he arrives in good form and looks to be the best of the rest.

Race 4: Hyland Race Colours Autumn Stakes (1400m)

One of the most prestigious races of the entire weekend is the Hyland Race Colours Autumn Stakes. A Group 2 contest, Southport Tycoon is likely to start at a short price.

Heading into the race, having placed in Group 2 and Group 3 company, he has the class to win a race of this nature. After those near misses, his time could be now.

Carbonados won the first two races of his career but found life in Group 3 company difficult and could only finish well down the field. He will be looking to bounce back here.

Zipaway could also be worth consideration at a price.

Race 5: The Big Screen Company T.S Carlyon Cup (1600m)

The Group action continues to come thick and fast with the Group 3 Carlyon Cup.

Foxy Cleopatra has yet to win at this level but has come close on several occasions. Having been off the track for nine weeks, she should arrive fresh and raring to go.

Yonce is no stranger to the winner’s, circle having won six of her first nine starts. She has placed fourth in Group 1 company and could easily have the class to win a race of this nature.

Race 6: Sportsbet Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m)

Another Group 3 awaits in the Sportsbet Blue Diamond Prelude. In one of the shortest graded races of the day, Peter and Paul Snowden look to have a great chance of victory as they will saddle the two heavy favourites.

High Octane and Bodyguard both produced a winning display on debut and look set to battle it out for the honours here.

Race 7: Sportsbet Blue Diamond Prelude for Fillies (1100m)

Sixteen talented fillies will head down to post for what looks like the most difficult betting heat of the day.

Bold Bastille and Kuroyanagi were good winners on their respective debuts, and both will want to follow up those positive performances here.

Hayasugi broke her maiden tag last time out and, at a price, could be worth a second look. Matisse and Tobeornottobe are two long shots that look capable of making an impact.

Race 8: McCaf Rubicon Stakes (1100m)

The graded action returns with the Group 2 McCaf Rubicon Stakes.

Fifteen runners have been declared, but the betting is set to revolve heavily around Asfoora. A winner of eight of her fifteen starts, she found life in Group 1 company difficult last time out and will be hoping to make her presence felt back down in grade.

Queen Of The Ball is a Group 3 winner and will be looking to land more major honours. Having been off the track since November, she easily won a trial race in preparation for this contest and should be fit and raring to go.

Race 9: Sportsbet C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m)

The most prestigious race of the day comes as the ninth race of the day, the Group 1 Orr Stakes.

The heavy favourite will be Mr Brightside. The runner-up at the 2023 Cox Plate, he has tasted victory at this level in the Memsie Stakes and Makybe Diva. He should make his class felt once again.

While it’s hard to look beyond the chances of Mr Brightside, Pride of Jenni and Veight look like strong candidates, but both will need to overcome wide draws.

Race 10: Senet Peter Le Grand Stakes

The final race of Saturday’s Caulfield card looks like one of the most competitive of the day.

Blanc De Blanc has placed at this level before, but her last competitive race came all the way back in March. Having run in two trial races, she should be ready to race but does arrive with some fitness questions to answer.

Estriella was only just denied in the Group 2 Darley Silver Shadow Stakes and looks to have all the qualities to land the spoils. She has also faced a long layoff but is another for the shortlist.

Amoursirra was an impressive winner on debut and will be hoping to make her presence felt in this higher grade.
