RACE TALK – Trial Watch Stars

31 January, 2024

Chris Scholtz tabs Trial Watch horses to follow from recent Sydney barrier trials.

ROSEHILL January 25

ENHANCE (Gerald Ryan/Sterling Alexiou): This stylish Exceed And Excel colt recorded the fastest win in the 2YO heats over 900m (54.49; 34.60), showing nice improvement off his first trial when second at Rosehill on January 11. Led comfortably and had plenty in reserve over the last 200m to score by almost three lengths.

MAKARENA (Hawkes Racing): Finished an impressive fourth in a strong 3YO fillies trial where the winner posted the fastest time in the 900m heats (53.75; 34.25). MAKARENA looked top shelf winning back to back races in September and October and her strong work under an easy ride in this trial was a perfect start to her autumn campaign.

RANDWICK January 22

ALINEA (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): Really shone with her impressive win by a soft 3.4 lengths in the fastest 741m heat of the morning (42.40; 32.37). Never came off the bit and looked to have a lot more to offer over the latter stages.

WARWICK FARM January 22

CELERITY (James Cummings): Impressive second by this unraced Exceed And Excel filly in the fastest of the four 2YO heats over 785m (46.16; 33.31) won by the previously noted CHATEAU MIRAVAL. Having her second trial, she settled five lengths off the winner and made her run widest on the turn before working to the line under a big hold from James McDonald to take good ground off the smart winner. It’s form worth following.

LEARNING TO FLY (Annabel Neasham): Class act showed she had trained on nicely from her first-up trial with a strong win in her 900m heat for Group horses on the course proper, letting down easily from off the pace to beat KIMOCHI in good time (52.41; 33.30).

WARWICK FARM January 16

CHATEAU MIRAVAL (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): This unraced Zousain filly is yet another natural talent from the top 2YO stable. Having her first trial since she was placed in an early trial at Randwick in October she looked an above talent travelling easily in the lead and never coming off the bit to win her 796m heat (47.63; 34.64) by 2.5 lengths with plenty in reserve.

CANTERBURY January 9

BLANC DE BLANC (Michael Freedman): A classy return by this I Am Invincible filly in her first appearance since she finished sixth in the Golden Slipper last March. Oozed class as she sat off the leaders, travelling three wide on the bit before easing past them under no pressure to record a soft win in her 902m heat (55.08; 34.31). The time was slow for the session but she had plenty in reserve.

LADY OF CAMELOT (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): There were numerous good 2YO trials but none matched the brilliance of this Written Tycoon filly as she sped away with her 899m heat by more than nine lengths in the fastest time of the morning (53.17; 33.10).

ROSEHILL December 29

REDBREAST (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): Impressive debut trial by this American Pharoah filly to run away with her maiden heat over 900m by almost five lengths (54.59; 34.60). Showed plenty of natural talent with the way she sprinted to the line under an easy ride.

WARWICK FARM December 22

RUSSIAN SNITZEL (David Pfeiffer): We previously rated this unraced Russian Revolution filly as an above average maiden and this impressive heat win over 810m in sharp time for the conditions (47.70; 33.91) adds to her reputation. She has won three of her four trials since April and is sure to be placed to advantage on debut by a smart stable.
